Day IV - 9th August Preview

---

The first of three finals days decides the medals for the men's single canoe. The two runs start at 17:30 and 19:00 at the simply named Whitewater Stadium. The gates will be reset from the previous days as the course runs clockwise down a five-stopper straight sectioned course.

Rugby 7's - Women's Bronze Medal Match [Live!]

GB v Canada.

Both sides working at best in the first half, but Canada was just too good and GB couldn't keep the ball as has been the case all competition.

8th August 2016 21:46

Boxing [-55 hours]

I've heard there was a shock defeat in the boxing earlier. I haven't seen any of it yet so it's time to compound watch to date.

Bout 1, men's 60kg vs Phi. a good adrenaline bout.

Bout 2, men's 91kg vs Pol. a tidy start but it felt frustratingly indisciplined by the end.

Some issue with the links as both boxing streams for Saturday are the same, ashame.

Bout 3, already into Sunday welterweight Irish v Alg. bit bored of that one.

Bout 4, think we're still in the welters, GB take on a heafty African boxer from Uganda. It's light heavy 81kg, I correct. The lucky Ugandan escaped a knock-down in the second.

Got to take a bed-rest, so it's going to be a results catch-up before I retire.

That's annoying, the first match of the competition and not findable online GB's Light Flyweight progressed. So that was 3 advancing from Saturday.

I've seen all the GB Sunday action, thin on the ground.

Today saw that first Light Flyweight drop out to a Cuban.

Just finished about 20 minutes prior a welterweight advancement.

And stopping me going anywhere near my bed, live, is Antony Fowlers first middleweight bout, though I might go get ready for bed whilst it's on, and annoyingly I've seen Okolie is boxing in an hours time too.

Gymastics - Men's Team Final

Had to explain this scoring system too, though I soon ended up on my own watching an off-form Chinese team as the fourth apparatus were heading to a close. Some good work but nerves showed. I gapped out to watch the rugby but on return the final scores were coming in and GB just missed out.

Diving - 10m Platform Final

The first outdoor diving venue for a couple of decades and it looks cool, not the best it could cool, but much better than an indoor pool. Had to explain to my step-mum why the crowd was 'booing the Brazillians' (ie they were booing the judges scores) as well as the scoring system. GB gets a bronze and the best celebration at the pool as we felt sorry for the Chinese who seemed to not appreciate the achievement.

Shooting - (M) Trap Final

We had a wild guess at the format for the trap as our GB guy was shown equal fourth in a shoot-off for fourth place. Really it was a shoot-off to be in the bronze medal play-off place. And then it would be rude not to carry on to watch that third place playoff for the Bronze Medal.

8th August 2016 19:23

First post-update this year. So the RS:X, Dempsey in the Sailing was good fun as the Lasers and Surfers crossed paths. The rugby was disappointing as the GB team seemed to panic against New Zealand. Had a good flick around the live streams, Table Tennis and normal Tennis.

I always feel how hard it must be to drive these canoes down the water. The British pair made good time but cruicially didn't get penalised.

So time to see the headlines I've missed.

Equestrian X-Country [Live!]

I love horses, best of all the animals. I love horses, on a cross-country course. Ecstatic that I'm home for this; I can easily sit watching this part of the discipline all day.

At regular events the first horse out is usually led by an experienced rider who may have a second horse later on in the event. Instead here we have the 50th ranked rider and she is giving us the long tour round.

Theres been a lot of rider errors more than horse errors during the first half hour. Even GBs first has had two refusals so far.

There have been refusals; last-minute changes; fence fallers and even a faller from just circling too tightly (this was from NZ, not exactly an amateur).

Rugby 7s - Third Pool Matches [-13 hours]

The next set of matches (live) kick off in three hours so I want to catch up with the 7s. I thought I had the full stream avaliable but they've split the matches across two. The first match (match 4 of the day) is the interest as GB takes on Canada for the top of the group. GB showing a great first half, and second.

The Fiji game was dominant so I skipped through that. Will stop for Australia v USA, should be decent.

This is the last session to complete my delayed Day 1. I've caught up maybe 4 hours in the last 24. Going to need to get a move on. A few records, and then the highlight - Adam Peaty for GB; he set a record in the heats and swam well again in the semis.

Round Up

Based on the lack of easily avaliable streams (and the sheer volume of matches) I'm going to catch up with the team sports, the results in quick form throughout the day.

Football - Brazil (M) haven't won a match yet, what?; the women's groups look more settled.

08 August 2016 12:40

Hockey - (M) GB v Belgium

It's a disorganised mess to find some of the streams for the multi-match sports. I've found various highlights but they are all titled with a result, boo or not highlights.

I've watched what I can watch. take a quick look at the tables.

Rowing - Day 3 (+ Day 2)

Finally I'm live, though I've got a lot to catch up on to feel I can watch proper coverage. A cloudy, less windy day. Hopefully it'll all come thick and fast starting with the quadruple sculls repechages.

GB are having a much better day of it.

Gymnastics - Men's Artistic Qualification [-36 hours]

Jumping into session 2, which is the GB, France and USA session.

First witnessed protest from the Germans for a floor routine, I didn't see it all but his first corner to corner run was multidirectional. So the tv went to the swimming so I'm switching again online. - which I'd love to do but subdivision 2 (this one) is not avaliable as a single stream, presumably cause it was shown broken over the main channels; will have to come back if I have time.

Swimming - Heats Day 1

Whilst I have the tennis running online I've found the tv coverage of the 6th heat of the men's 100m breaststroke which has drawn two GB athletes side-by-side, where in the intro 'something special happened'. A massive world record in the first round. That was all they were showing at the time.

Loading up the online stream, again no plans to watch it all, just the GB interest. Brilliant world record attempt by the Hungarian 400m IM final heater.

To finish the 'morning' session the 4x100m Freestyle Relay (still heats). Australia setting an record.

There appears to be no bookmarks on the streams which is annoying, or there is but it took time to load plus the streams individually aren't by match but in random chunks. This is the first time I'm opening the news page (for any sport) this games. So the round up shows a shock top seed exit in the men's; leaving Murray favourite in the singles. Yes! A much longer session planned for Day 3.

8th August 2016 10:24

Judo - (M) 60kg & (W) 48kg Medal Session [-39 hours]

So I need to work out a way to cut down three hours of action into not so much. Kind of got drawn into the first of the women's repechages and I would like to watch the whole session.Thankfully there are just 14 matches lasting no more than 5 minutes each (with few exceptions).

Each one of the repechages showcased a different variety of style of match, glad I saw those. The men's semifinal, Russia - Georgia, pretty sure I saw a moment of this match on the tv before I ran out the room on Saturday. The other men's semifinal is one to skip over to the final minute.

So it's about an hour of fighting if you skip through the stream, need to bear that in mind for the next week. ooooh there's blood in the first women's bronze medal match and a last second win. The second match, unlucky.

Gold medal match, Korea v Argentina and more blood and the match resets at three minutes and becomes the best women's match of the session.

Three matches to go, the women's competition has been completed. First bronze match is poor due to the Azb. lacking forwardness, second match a little better. The final is injury prone, a shaky ankle and then a thumb in the eye. Still stick with the women's match being better but this one does come a second-best and ends up going to a golden score.

Archery - (M) Team Medal Matches [-36 hours]

This becomes podium deciders number three for me. Starting with the bronze medal match before possibly a whitewash of a gold medal match from Korea.

China shot poorly until each archer of the team took himself a little longer to prepare, even then it was too late as Australia took it out of China's hands.

Korea didn't really give the US a chance, though they did fight hard. It's not spoiling anything to say Korea shot as perfect as will be seen at these games (team).

Hockey - (M) India v Ireland [-40 hours]

My background catch-up service today begins with two important hockey matches. First joining the Ireland match in the second quarter whilst I lie in my bed. First quarter highlights consist of nothing more than the first score of the match at the final play of the period.

Ireland remind me of the England football team at a major tournament; not getting things in their favour, mishitting, and not being able to control the ball. Albeit India are five-time world champions but only seem to really get pro on their set-plays.

The end of my TV recording comes here. Will have to catch the rest of the highlights once the Archery is over.

Rugby 7's - (W) Second Round Matches [-28 hours]

Now I've had a good look at the teams it is a much quicker whip around the surrounding matches about's the GB v Japan game.
Kenya made a score, and it impressed me. Much better start for GB, concerned about the size difference to the Japanese though the counter-rucking was a concern.

Bedtime for tonight. Rugby 7s matches from today (Sunday) on the breakfast line-up as well as the Judo, Fencing and Archery finals methinks. Equestrian X-Country day in the background.

Rugby 7's - (W) First Round Matches [-31.5 hours]

Just the GB matches in full for now before bedtime (the plan), have an entire day off for catch-up tomorrow. The stream has bookmarks on every score during each match (the new plan). I'm just watching the full stream (the new, new plan). Maybe I should just go back to the plan.

It's a quick format, and I would love to see lots of Olympic sports move toward quicker formats, squeeze a lot more into two weeks.

Why no bookmark for the Spain try? It's not a clever made play but rush plays score the same.

Trivia comes in the form that the first British participant of Rugby 7s at the Olympics was the referee for the New Zealand v Kenya match which started with a kick-off try with poor defence from Kenya.

Having no spoilers for the GB v Brazil match, though I see a lot of bookmarks, fingers-crossed. Impressed with the Brazillian posession (despite the slippy hands on it) during the first few minutes; GB can't get a grip either. Both sides poor there, would like to see improvements by game two.

Time to get a glimpse into the other two teams in the group, Canada and Japan. Another dominant game.

The final group showed an impressive Fiji who look like they are playing rugby, rugby; Australia look strong passers.

Cycling Road Race (M) [-33 hours]

I love to watch Road Cycling; Le Tour; The Tour; Vuelta; Giro and so on. Unfortunately I haven't got time to watch the entire end-to-end race so it's going to have to be another skippy occasion. Some good climbs on this years race though, hopefully creating some good action.

The breakaway formed about half an hour in, the first of the two circuit sections kick in after an hour. Wahey, some cobbles, always fun. And even some eschalons :) .

Been jumping in ten minute intervals; there wasn't masses to miss but some riders had a number of problems which could explain any deficiencies near the end of the race. Joining the race for to the finish with 45km to go, just over an hour to go.

The entire final lap before the finish is incident packed, not all in a good way but it does throw things up in the air. I'm glad I made an effort to watch this.

Rowing Highlights (Various) [-32 hours]
I have been made aware of one 'highlight' which I doubt I'll find through skipping through the rowing. First stop is heat 3 of the women's single skulls, no GB contingent but a single Irish entrant so it's probably worth a gander. Discussion going on of what I presume to be the increased choppy waters but I think that should be all part of the program - home advantage (though I haven't seen a Brazillian rower as of yet). Have a little skip to just over halfway and I'm heading straight back to watch it from the start, that's not a normal rowing competition. It turns out to be a weaker heat but it looks tough out there.

I'm just sticking to the GB interests for the rest of the session GB entries throughout until the final discipline of the day. The twosomes first then the foursomes. The men's pairs heat is more of an elimination race than a qualifying race as three of the four go through. Women's pair match was a tight heat. Men's double skulls was a heavily weighted heat with an Azerbaijan - New Zealand head-to-head race. A disappointing time for GB so far.

Onto the foursomes, some quicker races, got the longer ones out the way. Best race of the selection is the men's quadruple skull, but again not for the GB action.

Whilst I'm avoiding spoilers I have been made aware the planned Day 2 of the rowing was postponed due to the choppy waters (being as repechages actually do eliminate boats). So does that mean I can watch the Rowing live tomorrow?

Archery (M) Team Quarterfinals [-25.5 hours]

There should be clear favourites in each quarterfinal as the top four teams took a bye into this. Apparently if you are from Victoria, Australia you are officially a Victorian, ha. France took an advantage having already shot today and led out the first set but had a stinker comparitavly afterwards.

The Netherlands were back in the second against a scary Korea but off-form. Korea mightily impressive. It made the following matches seem mediocre. Italy just didn't fire up and China lacked the pressure to amp the score.

Final match for this session (though the stream does go straight into the Semis and Finals) sees the Indonesians take on the how-fat-is-your-cap US. Competitive match of the Quarters but not the day so far.

Rowing - Heats, Men's Single Sculls [-31 hours]

Thankfully, despite this stream being over four hours; there are bookmarks to those athletes from Gb and Ireland. I intend to start watching from the beginning but it's a guess how long before I start jumping, if I get the stream to play. Though I believe it'll be on the TV record so I might try that.

The TV coverage begins on heat 2 on the single sculls; guess they won't show heat 1 but I doubt I'll go back. The backdrop for this is amazing, much nicer than the usual rowing lakes.

After seven minutes of rowing (or 2 on a fast-forward) the defending champion looks dominant.

So this is just the best pick of the races on the main coverage channel; first Brit in a boat in lane 4, heat 4, also dominating his heat. But more excitingly there is choppy waters in the middle of the lake, a proper challenge.

And the Tv coverage switches to focus on the men's cycling race which I shall watch later.

Archery - Eliminators (M) Team [-29 hours]

Dinner was good. But back to the Archery, second set in the third elimination match. China struggling with the pressure? It goes to a fourth set. The wind seems to be swirling a bit, but not that strong, a nervous finish to the match which sees the first of many host athletes eliminated from their competition.

Final match of the eliminations is a battle of the East: Taipei v Indonesia, it looks to have tie-breaker potential. The second tied set is awarded the set of the round, great first triplet from both sides. Third set nearly as exciting but poorer. End of the first Archery session, been fun.

Archery - Eliminators (M) Team [-28.5 hours]

I'd love to watch every minute of every event, however there if I did that I'd be here all year, and I doubt the footage would be avaliable for that length of time. Another new scoring system in place for this time around. Each set of 6 arrows scoring 2 points for the higher scoreres; 1 for a tie so these matches may not take long, or could take a long while.

I am starting from the first arrow, France vs Malaysia, on a sunny green course. The first ten comes six arrows in, relieving worries that neither the weather or the quality of the lower ranked teams will expend the enjoyment of the team event. Had a skip through the third set as the match headed to a fourth. A perfect shoot on the final three darts of the match.

The second match started wildly for Spain; the Netherlands into it much quicker; a one sided-match. Match three, the home team Brazil unluckily draw China who are always a tough draw when accuracy is concerned, though I'm guessing they wouldn't be there without the home advantage. The wind is relatively little ~ 1km/h. And with that it's dinner time so I'll be back for more later.

Shooting - Finals (W) Air Rifle 10m [-26 hours]

I mistakingly jumped the video stream to the 'Bronze' button which jumped so far into the action I had no idea who, when or what was happening so far as some women were pointing guns. So it's back to the start. The stream is 1 hour, hopefully that includes the medal ceremony and the event won't take as long; though with my bandwidth it very well could take double.

Eight competitors, elimination style, with rounds of three; three and then single shots before being 'picked off' one-by-one. It's amazing how painful it can be to watch someone miss the centre of a target by less than 1mm.

An American is rarely an underdog in sport but in shooting it seems anybody who isn't from China can be considered one and she started well.

I couldn't pick for the main highlight of the day between the women's road race (est left); the second day of the women's rugby sevens where the playoff matches will shape up for tomorrow and the first day in the canoes on the white-water.

Swimming - Heats (M) 400m IM

I was suppose to be going to bed and starting all this tomorrow, however my girlfriend is really into her swimming so I thought it'd be nice to at least catch the first set of races before she set off to her working home. Suprisingly she wasn't aware why the first heat consisted of just three competitors, none of which qualified for the final; however despite the two seeded races the final will consist of racers from all three of the other IMs. But once that was over it was definitly time for bed. And we saw our first Britain in action as he did qualify for the final.

Day I - 6th August Preview

Finally after the ceremonies action gets underway properly today :)

The highlight of Day 1 will be the men's road race. An initial hour flat ride out to the first circuit which is ridden thrice with two 4th category climbs preceding a second circuit, of four loops, with the 1st category climb of an average 5.7% before a 20km flat finish back to the start.

Key times (left) show it'll be worth keeping an eye on the start at 13:30; if the race calms down then it'll be time to return about 14:30 for the first climb of the day which should take no more than five minutes.

It's unlikely to explode until at least 16:45 when the cyclists should be reaching the bottom of the first climb of the Vista Chinesa, a 15-30 minute climb depending on the pace of the racers.

All Quiet

So it's been all quiet up till now; I did not see the opening ceremony live. I am hosting a visitor and I've got work in just over an hour before we go see Finding Dory. Therefore I will begin accumulating the hours this evening and will be on catch up mode until my first fully free day on Monday whereby it will be wall-to-wall Rio.

IFL League Football

Updated table from Wednesday (left), and in the end I did award match of the day to the Australia - Canada match.

The men's competition is on the right, match of the day to Portugal - Argentina though before I saw those highlights I would have commended the goalfest Nigeria v Japan.

The league point for football will be awarded to a combined points score between both competitions. The further the teams progress the more points they can accumulate so a country in just one side of the competition could still win if both sides of a more prominent nation fail to progress.

Archery Arrows Off

No eliminations today, just a ranking round to determine who faces who from tomorrow onwards. The women shoot off in a couple of hours. The men's competition has been completed.
Britain's Patrick Huston ranked #38 and by my computations that will mean he will face the #27 Rick Van der Ven in the first round on Monday.

IFL League Football

Throughout the next two weeks the IFLSport Blog will be running it's own inter-sport championship. Each sport will have a weighting of either 0.5; 1 or 2 depending on it's sports status in the minds of IFLSport. The outcome from each sport will not necessarily be based on the direct results but include entertainment and enjoyment factors.

For example this is how the Football table is shaping up:

Each team is being awarded up to 5 points based on the skills on show and the action in match. Today I am maxing it out at 4 with the bonus point situation explained below. (Partially due to this being prior to the official start.)

As I will get to see most of all the games today there will be a bonus point awarded to both teams in the best game of the day, which currently is the Canada v Australia match (taking them to a maximum of 5 each for today).

As of the time of writing I have seen the entirety of the Can v Aus and Swe v SA matches. I will go back shortly to see the Brazil goal and highlights from the first half. China is already taking itself as a candidate to go up to 3 points if their form in the second half is brought to the standard within the 46th minute.

[Football will be awarded a weighting of 1]

The Action Has Got Better

Though I missed the opening goal and the subsequent booking which made the rest of the first half of Canada v Australia an exciting affair.

Not An Impressive Start

Half time and I'm not really interested in the match (Sweden 0 - 0 South Africa). A downfall of the Olympic plan to allow the individual associations to allocate places at the games, the best teams don't always make it, and to incorporate all the continents, you get some severe mis-matches and some dross. So I've taken a look for some of the more interesting stories from today:

The Nigerian men's team is stuck at Atlanta due to mis-payments - http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/36963812

A Japanese gymnast has been playing too much Poké Go - http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/olympics/36963170

The average athlete has been allocated 42 condoms -
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/sportsnews/article-3720857/Brazilian-authorities-hand-450-000-condoms-athletes-Olympics.html

Kicking Off with a Squib?

I've made it! Got back in time to catch the very first sporting action from Brazil which is from the Olympic Stadium itself. As the anthems play it looks less densely populated than a folk street party. I may have misheard the anthem announcement in the English but I'm sure I heard the instruction for us to 'listen to the Swedish national anthem'. I'm hoping for the Brazillian authorities these little things won't be indicative of things to come.
Going by the team kit advantage has to go to South Africa. The Swedish kit full gold akin to a z-class cabaret tribute act; though the Africans kit looks like it has a high possibility of coming from one of those bulk-buy shirt-printing website shops.
This is the same turf the athletics is hoping to get on next week. From the first few minutes it looks like it might hold up quite well but even the biggest football grounds get churned up so quickly these days. Slow and bobbly.
